Isis
Continuing training - handling feet
October 30th, 2007, Isis
has been here for nineteen days now. She is making progress by leaps and bounds.
She can now be approached and haltered with no issues at all. I don't
think it will be long before she is walking up and dropping her head in the
halter. She is leading better every day and is learning to cross over on the
front and move her hind end with just a gesture toward her hip. She is
very smart and wants to please. She learns FAST and rarely forgets anything.
This can be a mixed blessing, but for now we are feeling very blessed with how
fast she is progressing.
Today was the day she was going to learn to stand for handling her feet. Ted, being a farrier, believes that this is one of the most important lessons a horse can learn. She was already doing well with picking her feet up on the left side and was beginning to give her feet on the right, though not as easily. She is still very wary on her right side. A few more sessions should have her over that. Following are pictures from the trimming session.

Ted likes to show the horses all the tools ahead of time, they seem to be less
afraid of them that way - mustangs seem to like to taste them all!

She likes to see what you're doing all the time - curiosity is a sign of
intelligence.

Rear feet were no problem at all.
You can see that Ted really like the least amount of restraint possible.

Having a discussion about what a good girl she is!
Continuing training - Sacking Out

In addition to the trimming last night, Ted worked on sacking Isis out with the
plastic sack. She took all of that totally in stride. After initially looking at
the bag with big eyes and stepping back a time or two, she sniffed it, tasted it
and decided that it was harmless.
